Fly Fishing the Gunnison River in Gunnison, Colorado
The upper Gunnison River begins in Almont, Colorado, where the East and Taylor Rivers meet. Flowing through Gunnison toward Blue Mesa Reservoir, this Gold Medal trout fishery supports thriving populations of wild brown trout and rainbow trout. With opportunities for both wade fishing and float trips, the Gunnison offers exceptional fly fishing throughout the season.
What Makes the Gunnison River Gold Medal Water?
In January 2023, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) designated the Gunnison River from Almont to Highway 50 as Gold Medal water, recognizing its outstanding trout populations and fishing opportunities. CPW surveys recorded more than 200 pounds of trout per acre in two sampled reaches, substantially exceeding the 60-pound Gold Medal standard. Survey results also identified approximately 79–90 trout measuring over 14 inches per acre, compared to the required 12. With estimates of roughly 3,500 brown trout and 1,000 rainbow trout per mile, this productive river offers anglers excellent opportunities to pursue quality fish.
Trout and Kokanee Salmon in the Gunnison River
Brown trout dominate the Gunnison River's fishery, providing consistent action throughout much of the year. These fish spawn from mid-October through November, making egg patterns particularly effective during the fall. Anglers should avoid disturbing spawning fish and their redds. Rainbow trout are another popular target, with their spawning season generally occurring from mid-April through mid-May. Streamers, nymphs, and dry flies can all produce results depending on conditions. Kokanee salmon also enter the river during their annual fall spawning run, adding another seasonal attraction to the Gunnison's diverse fishery.
